I was scheduled to go on my first sponsored trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico (which is where I currently am) and knew I had quite a few things I wanted to do to prepare because…swimsuits, sun and more swimsuits. I made an appointment to get a deep bikini wax at Velvet Wax and Beauty and although I have gotten bikini and Brazilian waxes before, I wasn’t as prepared as I should have been. Here’s 3 things to know before getting your first bikini wax.
1. Waxing is a hair removal process that leaves your skin smooth. The hair is pulled from the root, therefore, the hair takes longer to grow back. Without hair you see bare skin and any razor bumps or ingrown hairs will show too. To alleviate these issues, my esthetician at Velvet Wax and Beauty, Marletha, recommended adding exfoliating to your skin care regimen. Exfoliating 2-3 times a week can help remove dead skin so that ingrown hairs are minimal. Just make sure not to exfoliate until a few days after getting waxed.
2. If you have a low pain tolerance, according to Marletha, “take baby steps.” No one said you have to go in and take it all off at once. Maybe get a little taken off and get a nice shape-up during the first trip, then move on to the rest. Doing all at once can be traumatic and you may never go back. Just know, it gets easier. The more you go the thinner you hair will grow in and the less painful it becomes.
3. Speak with your esthetician before the appointment to see if they suggest hard wax vs. strip wax. Hard wax is placed on the hairs in the opposite direction of hair growth. The wax shrinks around the hairs. Once hardened it’s pulled to remove the hair from the root. If you have more stubborn or coarse hair, this method may not be for you because the final result can possibly not look as clean as you would like. Strip wax works by being placed on the hairs in the opposite direction of hair growth then removed with a wax strip. This process seems to work best for those with “stubborn hairs” like myself or for those who may have shaved and the hairs are a little short. Either way, your esthetician would know best.
Keep in mind, everyones experience is different. However, you are in good hands at Velvet Wax and Beauty. If you have any tips to share with us, leave them below. We would love to know!!
